Reflective Narrative
Continuing on with what we accomplished in JAPN 404, my partner and I trekked on with our research topic and learned more about the resources that were available to us to use for collecting and presenting our findings. During this course we developed our project's abstract and finalized our research, presentations, script, and papers. A fair amount of my time was spent with my professors as they taught my partner and myself how to better develop a quality research project. Using Google applications (Google Docs, Slides, Forms) as our main method of presenting our project, my partner and I were able to easily collect and organize our research and survey results. Through Google Forms my partner and I created Japanese and English surveys to be sent to students in Japan, including those studying abroad at CSUMB, and in the United States, though mainly in California. As we accumulated our findings, my partner and I transferred our data into Google Slides to subsequently present our research and survey findings throughout the semester. Students would then provide us with feedback, suggesting how we should update our presentation or remove unnecessary information, helping us make our presentations easier to follow from the audience's perspective. The main problem my partner and I ran into was the creating of graphs and pie charts using Google Slides. The application did not allow us to organize our information in the manner that we preferred, but luckily a fellow classmate explained how to create graphs using an easier method resulting in us using Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel in the end. Our completed slides were then used to transfer the information to our research papers. The result was a well-organized and thoroughly researched and translated research project. In cooperation with JAPN 404, being in this course granted me the ability to work together with my classmates through peer evaluations, and allowed us time to meet with our advisers whom sacrificed their time in order to guide our thoughts and assist in the creation of our Capstone projects.
